['grəʊstest], Robert, englischer Philosoph, Naturforscher und Theologe, * Stradbroke (County Suffolk) um 1175, ✝ Buckden (County Buckinghamshire) 9. 10. 1253; war seit 1205 Professor in Oxford, 1214-21 Kanzler der Universität Oxford, 1229 (oder 1230)-35 erster Lektor der Theologie am Ordensstudium der Franziskaner in Oxford, seit 1235 Bischof von Lincoln. Grosseteste stand in engem Kontakt zu den griechisch-arabischen Wissenschaften, die er dem Westen durch lateinische Werkübersetzungen und Kommentare zugänglich machte (u. a. Kommentare zu Aristoteles, erste vollständige Übersetzung der »Nikomachischen Ethik« des Aristoteles, etwa 1246), und spielte eine entscheidende Rolle in der wissenschaftstheoretisch und naturphilosophisch orientierten Aristotelesrezeption seiner Zeit (Einfluss u. a. auf R. Bacon, Albertus Magnus, J. Duns Scotus). Grosseteste begründete die Schule von Oxford, die charakterisiert war durch Mathematisierung der Natur und durch die neuplatonisch geprägte Erklärung der Weltentstehung nach Analogie der Ausbreitung des Lichts (Lichtmetaphysik). Grundlegend war auch seine Theorie der wissenschaftlichen Vorgehensweise.
